Postovana gradonacelnice Carolyn Parrish,
Poštovani kancelori,
Poštovani kancelor John Kovac,
Dobro jutro,
Hvala vam
Honorable Mayor Carolyn Parrish, Honorable Councilors, Honorable Councilor John Kovac, Good morning,
It is my exceptional honour and pleasure to express my gratitude, on behalf of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community of Mississauga and on behalf of the Genocide Research Institute of Canada, to the City of Mississauga for its historic adoption of the Motion on the Srebrenica Genocide, which proclaims July 11 as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day.
The adoption of the Motion is an act of civilization, a victory for truth and justice, and an opportunity for catharsis and reconciliation in the Bosnia and Herzegovina region.
Those who deny or trivialize the Srebrenica genocide and other war crimes harm not only the victims, but also the overall efforts for peace and reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.
The trend of genocide denial is an insult not only to the verdicts, but also to the victims and survivors who are thus re-victimized.
By adopting the Motion on the Srebrenica Genocide, Mississauga is providing future generations with an opportunity to learn from the lessons of Srebrenica.
The voices of those who suffered these horrors as children remind us that ending genocide denial is not only a political and legal obligation, but a collective moral duty. We must stand united in the fight for truth and justice. Let us be guided by a sharp reminder in the words of an innocent child who asks his mother: "Mother, soldiers kill children with small bullets, don't they?".
This historic moment affirms Mississauga's commitment to an annual commemoration in dignity of the victims of the genocide, which claimed at least 8,372 lives.
We are happy that today the truth won in Mississauga, that the facts from the judgments of International courts won today, that starting today, every year on July 11, Mississauga will remember the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, that awareness will be raised about that event.
This is also an opportunity for the surviving victims of genocide, especially those who live in Mississauga, to turn a new page in their lives and move forward with their heads held high, proudly and dignifiedly living their lives, on their own terms, as victors over the criminals who are now rotting in prisons.
The Motion is an opportunity for all socially responsible people in Mississauga to build a new relationship towards genocide on the lines of civilization. Mississauga is coming out of this stronger, and a strong Mississauga is the guarantee that genocide will never be repeated.
We congratulate the city of Mississauga on adopting the Motion, which has a significant moral message for both the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, but also for Mississauga and Canada.
This is a historic day for Mississauga, the truth and justice have prevailed.
Thank you.
