History was made in Mississauga Assembly today!

Mississauga unanimously adopts Srebrenica Genocide Resolution

In a historic move, the City Council of Mississauga, one of Canada's largest cities, unanimously adopted a Resolution on the Srebrenica Genocide. This decision, announced by the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada (IGC), establishes July 11th as the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Day.

The Resolution was passed on December 10th, International Human Rights Day, coinciding with the 77th anniversary of both the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

The IGC hailed the adoption as a "civilizational act, a victory for truth and justice, and a powerful impetus for the institutionalization of the culture of remembrance." The city's action provides future generations with the opportunity to learn from the lessons of the genocide. 

The resolution reinforces the collective moral duty to end genocide denial and stands as a commitment to annually commemorate the dignity of the victims, a tragedy that claimed at least 8,372 lives. The IRGC emphasized that this step, strongly supported by the Bosnian-Herzegovinian diaspora, further solidifies Srebrenica’s standing on the Canadian stage as a symbol of the struggle for truth, justice, and the prevention of genocide. Mississauga's council, including Deputy Mayor John Kovac, was congratulated for this significant, powerful message.

Once again, Bosnian-Herzegovinian history has taken place in Canada, this time in the Mississauga Assembly. The Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica was unanimously adopted in the Assembly of the Canadian city of Mississauga. The Resolution preserves the memory of the victims of the genocide, strengthens our shared commitment to truth, justice, a culture of remembrance, peace and human dignity. The Resolution was sponsored by Councillor John Kovac. The co-sponsor was Councillor Chris Fonseca.

We congratulate the City of Mississauga, Mayor Carolyn Parrish, the Councillors of the Assembly and especially the sponsor of the resolution, Councillor and Deputy Mayor John Kova?, on the adoption of a resolution that has a huge and significant message for both the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, but also for Mississauga and Canada.
