Today is Nelson Mandela International Day.
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and a human rights hero. He was imprisoned for 27 years for political offenses and he never wavered in his efforts for racial equality. In 1993, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end apartheid and to “lay a foundation for democracy in South Africa.” In 1994, he became the country’s first Black president.He believed that peace could triumph over conflict, love over hate. Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
