Bosnian Canadian community commemorates anniversary of Srebrenica genocide
On Saturday July 8, 2023, the Bosnian Canadian community will be commemorating the 28th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide at Jackson Park in Windsor, Ontario at 12pm.
The commemoration will be held in front of the very first monument in the world dedicated to victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
The nearly four-year war in Bosnia culminated with a genocide on July 11, 1995, when Serb forces systematically killed more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica, Bosnia & Herzegovina – a UN-declared protected enclave.
The genocide in Srebrenica is known as the worst atrocity to be committed on European soil since World War II.
On Saturday, July 8th, a vehicle parade will be kicking off from Toronto at around 6am traveling to Windsor with more people joining in from Hamilton and London. Mayors of all four cities have already proclaimed July 11 to be Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day in their respective cities.
MP Brian Masse (Windsor West) who has sponsored both resolutions on the Srebrenica genocide in Canada will be the main guest at the event.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will also be sending a video message to the attendees.
In 2010 the Canadian parliament unanimously adopted the resolution declaring July 11 as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day, officially upholding verdicts of international and national courts.
Srebrenica has been internationally recognised as an act of genocide including by the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice.
Today, denial of the Srebrenica genocide among Serb society is rife. According to American genocide scholar Gregory H Stanton, who coined the “10 stages of genocide” theory, denial is “among the surest indicators of further genocidal massacres”.
That’s why the Bosnian Canadian community believes it’s important to commemorate victims of the Srebrenica genocide and make sure it never happens again.
On the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the organizing committee consisting of representatives of all organizations and communities in Canada under the auspices of the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada, the Islamic Community of Bosniaks of North America and the Bosnian Club Windsor welcome the public and media to attend the Canadian commemoration on July 8 in Windsor, in front of the first monument to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide in the diaspora.
