To the Organizing Committee of the Central Canadian Commemoration on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

Esselamu Aleykum,

May the peace and blessings of God Almighty be upon you all!

On behalf of the Islamic Community of Bosniaks of North America, I express my gratitude to the Organizing Committee of the Central Canadian Commemoration on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, which is being held in Windsor by the Bosnian diaspora in front of the monument to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.

All citizens of Bosnian-Herzegovinian origin living in Canada and many Canadians can testify that Canada has done perhaps the most in the world towards a Culture of Remembrance. Despite great resistance to using the word genocide, the Resolution on declaring July 11 as the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica was adopted unanimously in the Canadian Parliament on October 19, 2010. The process of lobbying and advocating for this Resolution lasted more than a year, and the dedication, commitment, integrity and courage, above all, of the members of the Canadian Genocide Research Institute, are the key factors that led to the realization of this significant achievement.

Work on the second resolution also unanimously adopted in the Canadian Parliament, advocating for the existence of a permanent exhibition on the genocide in Srebrenica in Canada's most elite museum institution, the Museum for Human Rights, work on the construction and opening of the monument to the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica in Windsor, the first such monument in the Bosnian diaspora, advocating that May 31 be celebrated in Canada as World White Ribbon Day, and finally the determination to criminally sanction the deniers of the genocide in Srebrenica in Canada are exemplary examples of consistent observance of international law.

We can only show our respect and say that we sincerely wish you will continue the work further to promote this Culture of Remembrance.

Dr. Sabahudin ef. Ceman,

Mufty of the Islamic Community of Boshnjak

in North America
