For the tenth time in a row, Hamilton remembers the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.
IGC - Collective Memory: It is up to all of us to remember the genocide so that it does not happen again.
On the eve of July 11, the day declared by the resolution of the Canadian Parliament to be the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, the Canadian town of Hamilton has once again raised the flag of Bosnia on its City Hall. In front of it, they wrote, "July 11: Srebrenica Remembrance Day, paying tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide." At the same time, the City of Hamilton's symbol was lit with white and green lights, symbolizing the Srebrenica Remembrance flower.

In a message to the Bosnian community in Hamilton, Mayor Andrea Horwath wrote:
On behalf of the City of Hamilton, I extend my deepest sympathies to the Bosnian Community in Hamilton, and around the world. Today, we mark the 28th anniversary of the 1995 Srebrenica Massacre, which saw over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys separated from their families and murdered - simply for being Muslim. It has never been more important for us to remember these horrendous acts of genocide - and recommit to never again allowing such atrocities to occur. We do this by ensuring that hate has no home here in Hamilton. No one should be made to suffer for who they love, where they come from, how they worship, or what language they speak. Let us reflect today on the lives lost, and on the consequences of letting hate and prejudice go unchecked. Let us also find strength in one another, and in coming together as a community,
united in our hope and aspirations for peace.

Today, IGC raises its voice because being silent about a crime is the only thing worse than the crime itself. We will not be silent.
