Premier Danielle Smith shared your email regarding the request to proclaim July 11, 2023, as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day. The Premier has asked me, as the Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women, to respond on behalf of the Government of Alberta.
I would like to apologize for my late response and thank you for all your hard work. Please send my office invites to any of your upcoming events.
I would also like to share additional information regarding the Special Days Act, which outlines the process for provincial declarations to recognize special dates in perpetuity. I encourage you to submit a request under the Special Days Act next year via the Special Days webpage.
Alberta’s government strongly condemns the senseless hatred and violence that fuels genocide. The Government of Alberta honours the memory of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, including the more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys who were killed and the thousands who were displaced from their homes.
On March 26, 2021, the Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month Act became law in Alberta. The act proclaims April of each year as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month to recognize the impact of the atrocities of genocide, remember the victims, and promote better understanding of the causes of genocide around the world.
