(Reuters reporting standards and the Trust Principles)

Dear Mr. Brian Moss,

We are writing to bring to your attention two concerns regarding recent Reuters articles.

Firstly, several instances in the coverage of the Srebrenica massacre suggest that it was merely "described" as genocide by two international courts. To ensure accuracy, it's crucial to note that both courts conclusively ruled it as genocide. I kindly request that Reuters uses precise language reflecting this legal determination to avoid any potential misinterpretation.

Secondly, We have observed that the ethnic terminology in some articles by Reuters, particularly those authored by Daria Sito-Sucic, might benefit from clarification. The reference to Bosniaks as "Bosnian Muslims" reduces them to a religious group rather than acknowledging their status as one of the three constituent peoples of Bosnia, alongside Serbs and Croats. It would be appreciated if Reuters could employ accurate and inclusive terminology in its reporting.

As an example, the following article contains instances that exemplify these concerns: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/bosnia-police-arrest-seven-serbs-suspected-1995-massacre-2023-12-15/

We are  hopeful that you will address these matters promptly and confirm the implementation of the necessary corrections to maintain the high journalistic standards that Reuters is known for.

Thank you, and We  look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Institute for Research of Genocide Canada
