IGC ICJ

In the first 100 days of Israel's onslaught on Gaza, at least 100,000 Palestinians were killed, injured and missing under the rubble according to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.

On Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) directed Israel to take measures to prevent acts of genocide against the Palestinians and enhance efforts to safeguard civilians. Despite not issuing a ceasefire as requested by South Africa, the ruling marked a legal setback for Israel.

Today, the ICJ determined two important points:
1. The charge of genocide is plausible.
2. The ICJ does have jurisdiction.

South Africa had brought the case to the ICJ, arguing that all nations are obligated to prevent genocide as it is a grave crime. The ICJ judges mandated Israel to utilize all available means to prevent its military from engaging in genocide, address incitement, improve the humanitarian conditions, and provide a progress report within a month.

The Institute for the Research of Genocide applauds this decision and is calling upon the Canadian government to leverage its influence with Israel to ensure compliance with this directive.
