Statehood Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Statehood Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina
The 25th of November marks a special day for the Bosnian people who live in Canada. It is the Statehood Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On this day in 1943, the Anti-Fascist Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ZAVNOBiH) adopted a resolution declaring Bosnia and Herzegovina an equal community of Serbs, Muslims and Croats. The ZAVNOBiH Resolution and the emerging of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina constitute a key date in the recent history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the basis which facilitated the complete independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina. ZAVNOBiH is proof that common living is not only possible, but also logical in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that a common state can only function for the good of all people. Thus, ZAVNOBiH is the most important date in our history, the date which confirms a millennium long history of Bosnia, and serves as a model for the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This date secured full equality and freedom to all its peoples. The legacy of the liberation from an antifascist war in WWII was an important foundation of the defensive tactics used in the war of 1992-1995. These tactics fought against fascism and were aimed at the preservation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It is a groundbreaking historical moment for contemporary Bosnia and Herzegovina as it confirms Bosnian statehood – including its legal, political and social endurance and elevation. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a centuries-old tradition of meeting and mixing of different civilizations and cultures that have been synthesized in a specific spirituality. This specific spirituality makes Bosnia and Herzegovina society specific and indivisible political community and state. It helped her to survive until today.
