WHEREAS today, we commemorate and honour all of those who were affected by the Srebrenica genocide and remember the Bosnian people who were impacted, the lives lost, and those who were displaced.
We pause to remember and commit to ensuring that such a tragedy is not repeated. Today also reminds us we all have a role to play to ensure no one has to suffer the atrocities of conflict.
The effects of this terrible incident are felt around the world including here in Toronto, a city many Bosnians call home. The community plays an integral role in the cultural fabric of our city.
Each year in April, the City of Toronto proclaims Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation, and Prevention Month to re-commit to protecting human rights and dignity for all, and to support a more just world for future generations.
The City of Toronto is dedicated to promoting equity, human rights and safety for all, and acknowledges that work still needs to be done to achieve peace in the world.
John Tory Mayor of Toronto
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim July 11, 2021 as "Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day" in the City of Toronto.
