Iako danas nisam s vama u Windsoru, želim da znate da sammislima i srcem uz sve vas koji ste se okupili da zajedno odamopo?ast žrtvama genocida u Srebrenici.
Okupljanje ispred prvog spomenika žrtvama genocida u Srebrenici podignutog u dijaspori nosi posebnu simboliku. Ono svjedo?i da sje?anje nije vezano za jedno mjesto, ve? za ljudekoji ga nose u svojim srcima i koji iz godine u godinu ?uvajuistinu, dostojanstvo i uspomenu na nevino stradale.
11. juli nije samo dan tuge. To je dan kada se s dubokimpijetetom prisje?amo više od osam hiljada ugašenih života i bolikoja ni nakon tri decenije ne prestaje. To je dan kada mislimo namajke koje još traže mir, na porodice koje nose teret gubitka i nageneracije koje odrastaju sa obavezom da ?uvaju istinu.
Posebnu zahvalnost želim uputiti Organizacionom odboru koji, pod pokroviteljstvom Instituta za istraživanje genocida Kanada, na ?elu s profesorom Emirom Rami?em, organizuje ovukomemoraciju, kao i cijeloj bosanskohercegova?koj zajednici u Kanadi. Vaš dugogodišnji rad nije samo organizacija jednekomemoracije. To je misija ?uvanja istine, dostojanstva žrtava ihistorijskog pam?enja našeg naroda. Ve? skoro deset godina, upravo u Windsoru, dostojanstveno organizujete centralnukanadsku komemoraciju i pokazujete da udaljenost od domovinenikada nije umanjila vašu ljubav prema Bosni i Hercegovini, nitivašu odlu?nost da se istina o Srebrenici prenosi budu?imgeneracijama.
Zahvalni smo Kanadi, njenim institucijama, kao i graduWindsoru, koji svojim kontinuiranim opredjeljenjem da ?uvajusje?anje na žrtve genocida potvr?uju da su istina, pravda iljudsko dostojanstvo univerzalne vrijednosti.
Danas, kada je me?unarodna zajednica usvajanjem RezolucijeGeneralne skupštine Ujedinjenih nacija još jednom potvrdilazna?aj 11. jula kao Me?unarodnog dana sje?anja na genocid u Srebrenici, naša odgovornost je još ve?a. Dužni smo biti glasistine, ?uvati dostojanstvo žrtava, odlu?no se suprotstavitisvakom pokušaju negiranja genocida i veli?anja ratnih zlo?inacate budu?im generacijama ostaviti naslije?e istine, mira iodgovornosti.
Naša je zajedni?ka obaveza da ?uvamo sje?anje, ne samo zbogonih koje smo izgubili, ve? i zbog onih koji dolaze poslije nas. Jer samo istina, ma koliko bila teška, može biti temeljpovjerenja, trajnog mira i istinskog pomirenja. Dok godpamtimo, govorimo istinu i u?imo nove generacije, žrtveSrebrenice ne?e biti zaboravljene. Your Excellencies,
Honorable Mayor Dilkens,
Distinguished representatives of Canadian institutions,
Dear members of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian community, and all friends of Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Although I am not with you in Windsor today, I want you to know that my thoughts and my heart are with all of you who have gathered to honour the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. Gathering at the first memorial dedicated to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide in the diaspora carries profound symbolism. It reminds us that remembrance is not confined to one place, but lives on through the people who carry it in their hearts and who, year after year, preserve the truth, the dignity, and the memory of those who were innocently killed.
July 11 is more than a day of mourning. It is a day on which we honour the memory of more than 8000 innocent lives taken in the genocide and pay tribute to the immeasurable suffering that, even after three decades, has not faded. It is a day when we stand with the mothers whose grief endures, with the families who continue to bear the weight of unimaginable loss, and with the generations who have inherited the responsibility to preserve the truth and ensure that such atrocities are never forgotten.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Organizing Committee, which, under the patronage of the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada and led by Professor Emir Rami?, have organized this commemoration, as well as to the entire Bosnian and Herzegovinian community in Canada. Your longstanding commitment goes far beyond organizing a single commemoration. It is a mission dedicated to preserving the truth, honouring the dignity of the victims, and safeguarding our collective historical memory. For nearly a decade, Windsor has been the home of Canada’s central commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide, reflecting your unwavering commitment to remembrance. You have shown that distance from your homeland can never diminish love for Bosnia and Herzegovina, nor weaken the resolve to ensure that the truth about Srebrenica is preserved and passed on to future generations.
We are deeply grateful to Canada, its institutions, and the City of Windsor for their steadfast commitment to preserving the memory of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. Through their continued support, they affirm that truth, justice, and human dignity are not only enduring principles, but universal values that must be protected and upheld by us all.
With the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution proclaiming July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica, our responsibility is greater than ever. We have a duty to speak the truth, to uphold the dignity of the victims, to firmly oppose every attempt to deny the genocide or glorify war criminals, and to leave future generations a legacy rooted in truth, peace, and responsibility.
It is our shared duty to preserve remembrance, not only for those we have lost, but also for those who will come after us. For only the truth, however painful it may be, can serve as the foundation for trust, lasting peace, and genuine reconciliation. As long as we remember, speak the truth, and pass it on to future generations, the victims of Srebrenica will never be forgotten. Thank you.
